Root Beer:
Kevin has taken the art of brewing one step further and made some root beer 10 days ago with Rocco and Xavier Zimmerman (from across the street). Roots of all sorts began to arrive in the last month from a variety of on-line herb and root sources. (One might say a lot of roots $$). They gathered around the boiling pot steaming sassafras and sundry items in their cauldron of concoction while munching popcorn and watching Finding Nemo. There are 5 cups of sugar in 16 bottles of root beer!
The guy at the local brew store gave Kevin the tip that he should fill a plastic bottle of root beer and when the bottle won't squeeze with gentle pressure, the fizzing is done and the bottles (glass) should be refrigerated to stop the process of carbonation.
Katie sent photos of the boys in their lederhoesen (a 2 yr old tradition in their house) and Mitch helped Kev format the labels-very cute!
Unfortunately, late Saturday night he removed the root beer from the fridge, applied the adorable labels--and (it must have reactivated the process) ---30 minutes later KA-BOOM!!!! 16 bottles broke all over the kitchen, glass flew and ricocheted to every room on the first floor and we have been mopping sugar water ever since!
They still got to see their darling faces on store-bought root beer bottles but we all learned a valuable lesson about home brewing--best to buy root beer from a store--no safety goggles required :D
