Spit and a Prayer

My Grandma used to say things like "this is held together with spit and a prayer" ...and I think she would stand with her hands on her hips and say that now about our cabin. It just needs to hang in there until college is in the rear-view mirror, folks!

Last weekend we opened the cabin--a little later than usual. We held our breath as the water started to flow through the pipes and frantically looked around the outside for signs of leaks. Due to all the recent rain that was a bit hard to tell. But the pipes seem to have made it through the winter and the cabin itself is always fairly shiny and waiting to greet us.  I cleaned and we added a few touches (curtain, ceiling light fixtures) here and there,  knowing that we need to help this little place stay on solid ground for a few more years before we tear her down and build up!
Well, its the solid ground part that's tricky. The cabin is so low to the ground, with a dirt foundation, that moisture wafts upward into the floorboards constantly. We have already replaced the front room and hallway floors, and I decided it was time to replace the sagging back bedroom floor this year. We needed to get it done quickly because the bachelor party will take place there June 16th.

The back bedroom has the custom cedar log bunked and the carpenter thought he would assess the floors before deciding if it all needed replacing. No sooner did he begin to work in the room and adjust the bed, when it fell through the floor!
You can imagine his surprise when the whole thing gave way!

He took the bed apart (sorry about that!) and replaced everything. The carpet went in Saturday.
Tom was nice enough to keep me posted with photos. Emily insisted I blog about it but I am rather embarrassed it took us so long to fix that floor. De-Nial is just a river in Egypt I guess.
Dirt foundation :(
Ew..
Ahh...
Time to dream about my new 2 story cabin..........with window seats, sleeping nooks, french patio doors................
