Mahalo

Mahalo (thank you) to Nick and Nicki for having the foresight and spirit to move to Hawaii! We met them on Friday night in Oahu and started a 9 day adventure filled with love, great food, fabulous beaches, the ocean surf, and loads of conversation and laughs.

They stayed with us at the Hilton Hawaiian Village while the AMA was in session. After a wonderful ocean side brunch Saturday, we toured some beaches on the eastern shore while Kevin was free and joined the Nebraska contingent that evening for dinner.

After brunch we headed past Diamond Head to the southeastern shore

"Sandy Beach"--A little threatening-for swimmers but what a beautiful beach and surf!

After the first beach Nick said the NU game was tied up and we had to find a sports bar fast! Luckily we did find an open air sports bar that was happy to put the game on for us and we watched the Huskers win! On to the next beach :D

The next day, Kev was busy all day, but Nick asked the concierge for the names of his favorite beaches and the three of us set off to find them. These were on the northern shore and included quiet beaches, beaches with city parks, and the Banzai pipeline which exhibited ferocious waves for surfers and we arrived just in time for sunset and high tide!

How cute are these two?

We ended the day at the Banzai pipeline watching the surf and surfers. Check out this video that I chose because it was shot at this time last year and I think the waves are really similar to what we saw and the surfers riding them. What a fun day!

Our last night in Oahu found us at the beach house. What makes this restaurant extraordinary is the setting. It is the front porch of a large, old and grand hotel and there is a huge tree in the courtyard on the beachside.  So, we sat under the trees on a large open porch/deck, watching the surf and feeling the ocean breeze.  beach house photo gallery  I had the "whole Thai snapper" and we savored the entire evening of seafood, surf and the setting.

On Monday the Nicks had returned to Maui and we had Tuesday morning to make on last stop--Pali Point. Above a 980 foot cliff, it was "here in 1795 that King Kamehameha and his warriors defeated the O'ahu armies by sending them over these steep, forested cliffs and claiming his victory and uniting the Hawaiian Islands".  The views leave you speechless--and again I tried panoramas to show you that.

                       Aloha Oahu, On to Maui!
